Subjects each have their own colour. So do vulnerability groups, paired in saturated and pastel volumes — the chart variant and the inline pill variant of the same hue, so a SEN pupil reads as SEN whether they're a dot on a chart or a label next to their name.

Spacing sits on an 8-pixel grid. Type sits at three weights, never more. None of this is on the screen a Headteacher sees on a Tuesday afternoon. All of it is shaping the screen she sees.

Nobody asked for any of it. But they feel it.

Most of what we live with was made carelessly. Buildings, products, software — built to a deadline by people who never had to use them. Whether it works for the person on the other side is somebody else's problem.

I've tried, stubbornly, to make something that doesn't sit in that pile. I know a Headteacher is going to sit down in front of this screen on a Tuesday afternoon, tired, with too much on. The screen will either respect her or it won't.

She won't be able to say which. People sense more than they can put into words. The care that went into this software is meant for her — and whether she feels it is the only test that matters.
